Ministry of external affairs said on Thursday that India will be taking up issue of blocking Brahmaputra Tributary in Tibet to facilitate the hydro-power project which is “most expensive “whose construction began in 2014.
According to the state-run agency, The Lalho project on Xiabuqu river, a tributary of the Brahmaputra in Tibet’s Xigaze, is being constructed with an investment of of 4.95 billion yuan ($740 million), which makes it the most expensive project in China.
In upper reaches, Brahmaputra is called Yarlung Zangbo. India has a bilateral agreement with China to share information on cross border rivers which include both Sutlej and Brahmaputra.
“We have conveyed to the Chinese side that they should be mindful of the interests of the lower riparian while undertaking any projects on these rivers,” the spokesperson pointed out.
