Antonio Guterres, the Former Prime Minister of Portugal is all set to be chosen as the new UN Secretary General. He will be replacing the current UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon of South Africa. The five countries of the UN Security Council (UNSC) holding veto-powers voted against his candidacy in a secret ballot.
Antonio Guterres now has to be formally recommended to the 193 member General Assembly for approval of his candidacy. Guterres will be stepping down by the end of 2016 after serving two terms.
The Security Council will be adopting a resolution, traditionally behind closed doors, recommending that the General Assembly appoint Mr. Guterres for a five-year term from Jan. 1, 2017. This resolution needs nine votes in favour and no vetoes to pass.
