As Lionel Messi announced his unexpected and untimely retirement, not only the world but the Indian cricket world also stands shocked. Looked at it from another angle, Messi’s decision is reasonable after all – this is the third final he lost to Argentina in the last 3 years.
Former Indian cricket team skipper Sourav Ganguly said that Messi should have continued until the next world cup (2018). There’s no denying that the 29-year old football legend had so much greatness still left in him!
Messi took the world, especially millions of his fans across the world, by surprise when after losing the Centenario Copa America 2016 final to Chile when he announced his international retirement. Suresh Raina and Shikhar Dhawan are the other cricketers who were vocal in their response to this shock.
Raina described Messi as the “heartofthegame” in his tweet.
On the other end of the spectrum, Messi fans and others across the world took this news to troll Shahid Afridi, the Pakistani cricketer who keeps returning after every announcement of retirement.
People created tweets claiming fake interviews of Messi where he says that he’s “not Shahid Afridi” when asked whether he will “reconsider his decision.” Others asked Messi to follow Shahid Afridi when making such announcements, who is claimed to retire every year, only to return back to cricket again and again.
Sadly, the world’s most popular footballer has confirmed that his decision to quit international football is final. However, the respite for Messi fans is that they’ll be able to watch him perform his ‘art’ on the field in European football.
Hope Shahid Afridi can learn something from Messi after all!
