From the populist Five Star Party, Rome’s Mayor Virginia Raggi said that the city had to prioritize matters such as rubbish collection and corruption. As Hamburg and Boston also abandoned the bids, that mean only Los Angeles, Budapest and Paris are left in the running. The decision will be taken by next September by the International Olympic Committee.
Committee chief Giovanni Malago said the decision meant Italy had been “made to look like fools” and would miss out on investment.
the broader Rome municipality and the Italian Government had supported the bid, which includes many small town councils, to oppose Five Star’s decision.
Rome was to host 2020 Olympics but it was pulled out of the race in 2012 because of Mario Monti, the then Prime Minister feared affordability issues for Italy.
