Shale gas for the first time arrived on the shores of U.K. from the U.S. A tanker with 27500m3 of ethane reached Grangemouth, the site of the petrochemicals plant owned by Ineos from the US shale fields.
This shipment was criticized by many environmental groups and politicians. According to them, the process which involves injecting water, sand and chemicals into the rock at high pressure damages the environment.
The imports are due to replace dwindling supplies from the UK’s North Sea reserves. They also claim that it will create jobs and also provide financial benefits to communities near the industry’s infrastructure.
